Restoration Project continues each Tuesday morning from 8AM until noon. Come join fellow GCMN volunteers. Results of planting effort can be seen in the attached file.   

2013 December Meeting / Holiday Party

It’s that time of year to attend the Gulf Coast Master Naturalist Holiday Party which takes place on Thursday, December 5, at the Judson Robinson Center: set up and decorating starting at 5 PM; appetizers starting at 5:30 PM; dinner at 6:30 PM.

All Master Naturalists, interns, students and their families are invited.

 

The event this year will be both a celebration of the holidays and achievements of our members as well as a short business meeting when 2014 officers will be elected.

Sheldon Green the Prairie April 20

Over 100 volunteers participated and planted 2,900 native prairie grasses and forbs in an area just north of the new observation tower. This brings our planted total to 7,700 for 2013 and 51,400 since the prairie restoration project was initiated in 2009. Regular GCMN Volunteers every Tuesday morning from 8 am to 12 noon include Millie Morgan, Beth Kennedy, Marilyn Painchaud, Arlene Vining, Wyatt Williams, Paulette Pittman, Sandy Wilson, and John Egan. Please come join us and get those necessary volunteer hours for certification/recertification. There are no special requirements.

GRANT RECEIVED

On December 19, LyondellBasell award GCMN with a grant of $1,000 to support on-going habitat and related wildlife restortion projects at Sheldon Lake State Park (SLSP). LyondellBassel has been a long time suppoter of SLSP in the areas of education, environmental conservation

PRAIRIE PLANT-A-THON

On November 10, GCMN and other volunteers from the area gathered at Sheldon Lake State Park for the annual planting that takes place the 2nd Saturday in November each year. Lunch was provided by LyondellBassel. Approximately 2,500 native forbs and grases were returned to the prairie. Pictured is the planting activities as seen from the observation tower. (Photo courtesy of Lorey Wing).

Prairie Restoration Partnership

Jason Frederick (right) Project Blazing Star and John Egan Project Sheldon join together Sept 29 at Sheldon to rescue a truck load of Indian Grass for use by Blazing Star. Per Andy Sipocz, TPWD Regional Biologist, the Indian grass originated from Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge seed. Directing Jason and John in the effort was Tom Olson, Sheldon Park Ranger. In addition, Sheldon provided Blazing Star with 20 pots of gamagrass.

Each chapter meeting in April, August and December will be a special meeting to recognize the hard work of volunteers.  Milestone pins represent your first certification, or a re-certification or special number of hours.  Celebrate your milestone by contacting the Membership Officer and the President to let us know you have earned a milestone.  To receive your shirt and name bag contact the Secretary.

Regional Texas Master Naturalist Meeting - July 14th!!!

Calling all TMNs in the southeast Texas region. Our Second Annual regional meeting is set for July 14th. It will be a day of friendship and learning, with up to seven hours of advanced training. If you wish to attend please mail your registration form to arrive by July 10 please! 

Lunch is planned as a cool summer luncheon with chicken salad, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and a nice dessert, all served with beer bread and iced tea. If you cannot eat chicken salad, please contact Teri MacArthur.
